15. The Maggot

I MADE IT INTO MY HOMEROOM registration before the teacher arrived, and took my usual seat, swiveling it around so I could catch up with the guys sitting behind me.

Damon gave me a bored smile and a jerk of his chin in greeting, but I noticed Jaxson looking at me with a slightly pained sympathetic expression. It finally occurred to me that Emma had been right all along, people were feeling sorry for me and it wasn’t a nice experience.

“How’s it going?” I asked, as casually as I could.

“Cool,” Damon grunted,. “We were just discussing the Valentine’s dance. Rachel asked if you were still going?”

Rachel was Damon’s girlfriend and also the girl next door for me, literally. She’s seriously pretty, and was my first kiss back when we were eleven, but we know each other way too well to be attracted now that we’re older. She’s more like a sister these days, and probably my only real female friend. But funnily enough, she’d never liked Scarlett. That should have been a sign, right?

“Damon!” Jaxson gave Damon a glare at his insensitive question, but Damon didn’t pick up on it.

I gave Jaxson a smile to show I wasn’t bothered, but that I appreciated the gesture. Now came the tricky bit.

“Of course I’m going, I have the suit and I have the girl, all I need is the music and the romance is on.” I gave a wink to suggest there was more than just romance in the cards.

“Wait, what? You and Scarlett are back together?” Damon asked, rousing out of his usual sleepy morning time demeanor.

“Of course not!” I said with a little more anger than I intended. “I’m going with Emma Mason.”

“Who?” Damon looked confused. He’s pretty sharp when he wants to be, especially on the sporting field, but he’s like a clueless moron when it comes to pretty much everything else. For some reason, girls find that absolutely adorable. It doesn’t hurt that he’s also built like an action hero and way more good looking than he deserves.

“You’re going with Emma? Lucy’s friend, Emma?” Jaxson looked totally taken aback and I remembered far too late that Jaxson’s girlfriend is Emma’s best-friend, Lucy.

Jaxson and Lucy have a discreet but solid relationship. They don’t hang together much at school because they have nothing in common, and because Lucy is an awkward nerd who doesn’t want to get to know any of us. But he’s totally besotted with her and they have that quiet kind of love that you just know will endure for years. Which meant that Lucy would tell Jaxson the truth. So, the question was: would Emma tell Lucy the truth? Girls do that, don’t they? They share everything with their best friend?

But I’d made Emma a promise and I was going to uphold my end.

“That’s right,” I nodded at Jaxson. “Now that she’s single I thought I’d try my luck with her, I’ve always liked her.” I said, sticking firmly to the story.

It was Jaxson’s turn to look slightly bewildered, and it was quite comical how much his expression matched Damon’s.
