15. The Maggot
I MADE IT INTO MY HOMEROOM registration before the teacher arrived, and took my usual seat, swiveling it around so I could catch up with the guys sitting behind me.
Damon gave me a bored smile and a jerk of his chin in greeting, but I noticed Jaxson looking at me with a slightly pained sympathetic expression. It finally occurred to me that Emma had been right all along, people were feeling sorry for me and it wasnât a nice experience.
âHowâs it going?â I asked, as casually as I could.
âCool,â Damon grunted,. âWe were just discussing the Valentineâs dance. Rachel asked if you were still going?â
Rachel was Damonâs girlfriend and also the girl next door for me, literally. Sheâs seriously pretty, and was my first kiss back when we were eleven, but we know each other way too well to be attracted now that weâre older. Sheâs more like a sister these days, and probably my only real female friend. But funnily enough, sheâd never liked Scarlett. That should have been a sign, right?
âDamon!â Jaxson gave Damon a glare at his insensitive question, but Damon didnât pick up on it.
I gave Jaxson a smile to show I wasnât bothered, but that I appreciated the gesture. Now came the tricky bit.
âOf course Iâm going, I have the suit and I have the girl, all I need is the music and the romance is on.â I gave a wink to suggest there was more than just romance in the cards.
âWait, what? You and Scarlett are back together?â Damon asked, rousing out of his usual sleepy morning time demeanor.
âOf course not!â I said with a little more anger than I intended. âIâm going with Emma Mason.â
âWho?â Damon looked confused. Heâs pretty sharp when he wants to be, especially on the sporting field, but heâs like a clueless moron when it comes to pretty much everything else. For some reason, girls find that absolutely adorable. It doesnât hurt that heâs also built like an action hero and way more good looking than he deserves.
âYouâre going with Emma? Lucyâs friend, Emma?â Jaxson looked totally taken aback and I remembered far too late that Jaxsonâs girlfriend is Emmaâs best-friend, Lucy.
Jaxson and Lucy have a discreet but solid relationship. They donât hang together much at school because they have nothing in common, and because Lucy is an awkward nerd who doesnât want to get to know any of us. But heâs totally besotted with her and they have that quiet kind of love that you just know will endure for years. Which meant that Lucy would tell Jaxson the truth. So, the question was: would Emma tell Lucy the truth? Girls do that, donât they? They share everything with their best friend?
But Iâd made Emma a promise and I was going to uphold my end.
âThatâs right,â I nodded at Jaxson. âNow that sheâs single I thought Iâd try my luck with her, Iâve always liked her.â I said, sticking firmly to the story.
It was Jaxsonâs turn to look slightly bewildered, and it was quite comical how much his expression matched Damonâs.
